Team Air Force 2010

Team Air Force for the 2019 Department of Defense Warrior Games in Tampa, Fla. are ready for the upcoming competition. The Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2) selected the team from a field of over 100 wounded warrior athletes. Captain Hunter Barnhill meets 9 year old Charli Butler for the first time during the DoD Warrior Games 2018. Capt. Barnhill was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 30, Charli was diagnosed at just 5 weeks old. Charli has pushed through treatment to include chemo-therapy and is now in remission. While Capt. Barnhill is still going through treatment he said, "I'm rowing for Charli, my passion for fighting has be re-kindled". Capt. Warrior Profile

Retired Senior Airman Lucas Purser is in full-on training mode for the 2019 Air Force Trials. He competed as part of Team Air Force at the 2016 Department of Defense Warrior Games at the United States Military Academy at West Point and Team US at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. The Air Force Trials and Warrior Games are Paralympic-style competitive events that showcase the use of adaptive sports in recovery and highlights the resiliency of wounded warriors from all branches of the U.S. military. In 2012, during Operation Enduring Freedom, Maj. Gregory Harris, then a captain, deployed to Bagram Airfield with the 41 Expeditionary Electronic Combat Squadron, 455 Air Expeditionary Wing, as the mission crew commander of an EC-130H. Serving as the mission crew commander, he was responsible for ensuring the flight crew successfully (and safely) completed the mission: providing counter communication support to coalition forces. Warrior Care Month 2018

Tech Sgt. Robert Cowherd moves up the court during wheelchair basketball practice at the NE Region Warrior CARE Event at Joint Base Andrews, MD. He said he had avoided coming to these events because he felt he could not do what he use to be able to do. Two weeks prior to this event he tried to back out but Tim Griggs, his AFW2 Recovery Care Coordinator (RCC), wouldn't let him. Today he found that he could do so much more and learned a valuable lesson from the coach: "Never apologize." The biggest moving part of the AFW2 Warrior CARE Events is the adaptive sports. It's dynamic and fast-moving, giving each warrior an opportunity to see what they can do versus what they cannot. These wounded warriors often come to the events with a prescribed lists of things they cannot do and the coaching staff work hard to move around those mental barriers to increase their restorative care for long-term success in their overall recovery. "Hey, pay attention to me," this service dog says. Service dogs are part of the holistic care many wounded warriors have as part of their recovery. 12 Hugs a Day

Technical Sgt. Roann Leatz lets the AFW2 staff know how she feels about attending events with us. The hug is part of a therapeutic alliance we have with our wounded warriors that releases oxtocin, a biological chemical that elevates mood and helps in the recovery process. The program lives by the idea that 12 hugs a day leads to a more successful recovery. Improv to Improve

AFW2 Caregiver Domonique Oneal-Greene is participating in an "Improve to Improve" class. Wounded warriors and their caregivers learn how improvisational comedy skills can help them cope with daily struggles. It gives them a new tool to add to their toolbox for recovery and is part of the restorative care model AFW2 has adopted.
